Winner Of The 2018-19 Steven Malama Award Thanks Dr. Mahtani For His Contributions

 

For the past three decades, Dr. Rajan Mahtani has maintained the reputation of one of the most honest, ethical and transparent business professional in Zambia. His success stories are not limited to establishing top companies in Zambia such as Mahtani Group of Companies and Finsbury Investments; but also contributing to the economic and social development of the Zambian nation in a significant manner. His philanthropic activities and charitable contributions are just significant as his business ventures. One of the major contributions of Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani in the field of education was the establishment of the Steven Malama Award.

The Steven Malama award was launched by Finance Bank Zambia on behalf of Dr. Rajan Mahtani who is the presiding Chairman of the Finance Bank Zambia. The award was established in the year 2012 for honouring the late Steven Malama, an honorary legal professional known for his significant contributions for upliftment of the legal system in Zambia. The Steven Malama award was inaugurated in the year 2013 and since then, it is given every year to the best graduating candidate from the ZIALE (Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education) and also qualifies for bar in first attempt.

Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba won the award for the year 2018-19. To share his gratitude, an article was written by Emmanuel which was published by Daily Mail. In this article, Emmanuel thanked Dr. Mahtani for his significant contribution to the legal education system in Zambia. The award carries a plaque, certificate and a cash money worth K15,000 which has been instrumental in providing financial support to the winning graduates in achieving their educational and career dreams.

Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani finally received joy of relief and his patience was rewarded with the judge from the Court of Appeal effectively reversed the judgement of Lusaka High Court. This historic announcement was given on 31 st January 2019 during the morning hours of the court session. This judgement was for Portland Cement Zambia, a noted cement-manufacturing factory in Zambia which has been begging for justice from the government of Zambia for the past ten years. After more than ten years of wait, Dr. Rajan Mahtani finally received justice when the opposition, Ventriglias, were knocked down by the Court of Appeal. This long fight has been for Zambezi Portland Cement, a noted cement manufacturing factory which has been contested by both parties. The initial compliant regarding the illegal takeover of the factory was registered by Dr. Rajan Mahtani at the Lusaka High Court .
